Shock Poll: McCain %49, Obama %45 Among Likely Voters

I am not usually one to put too much focus on the polls especially this early in the game, but this may very well be the first poll that puts McCain ahead of Obama. The USA Today/Gallup Poll reports that "the Friday-Sunday poll, mostly conducted as Obama was returning from his much-publicized overseas trip and released just this hour, shows McCain now ahead 49%-45% among voters that Gallup believes are most likely to go to the polls in November." Of course this is only one poll, and other polls such as Rasmussen that puts Obama ahead by %3. This still comes as a surprise because this poll seems to suggest that the Obama world tour and the media circus that gave it all the attention ended up not helping the Democratic candidate. This is also shocking because I have always thought that this was the Democrat's election to win. President Bush has a disapproval rating hovering around seventy percent and you would think that the Democratic candidate would be able to tap into that frustration and gain a strong lead. This does not seem to be the case. We are now in the 100 day stretch to the election and this race may end up being tighter than people imagined. I think Obama should be somewhat worried if all-consuming attention and speeches in Berlin do not even end up helping him in the polls. I repeat, however, that polls are very often unreliable and the only poll that truly counts is the vote in November.
