  1. I'm not going to knock the fact that the US has had 7 years without another Al-Qaeda attack, but I don't agree that it's mostly because of Bush. Any president would have had to do the same.
Further, the fact that his proposals have been checked along the way is to be expected. This is called separation of powers and is part of the system of checks and balances. The problem that many people have with his methods is that he did not follow the checks and balances system. For example, the immunity from grand jury and senate testimony he gave to his staff, as well as the Patriot act, are practices one would expect from a dictatorial regime, not a western democratic republic. Although desperate times call for desperate measures, and some of his policies are arguably both effective and necessary, one should not criticize his opponents for opposing. On a case by case basis, perhaps their specific criticisms are wrong. However, they are elected to bring different sides to the issues, so that in the end a method can be found that is both effective, and acceptable to a substantial part (if not the majority) of the population.
Regarding the falling out of favor of his party... I can't say why the Republicans are no longer confident in the party, or even if this is the case, because I don't know. But I can say that in four years many Republicans will have forgiven and forgotten their current problems with the Republican party, partly because people have short memories, and party because the GOP will be working hard to this effect, and the party will find some way to unify itself in time for the next general election, if not sooner.
