U.S. Confident That Top Taliban Commander In Afghanistan Has Been Killed

The Associated Press reports that "U.S. authorities are increasingly confident that top Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud was killed in Wednesday's U.S. missile strike in northeastern Pakistan, officials said Friday. A senior counterterrorism official said that while the U.S. is still working on final identification, authorities now have strong indications that Mehsud is dead. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence reports. Mehsud is Pakistan's most wanted criminal. U.S. officials say he was becoming a greater threat to Western interests as he directed suicide attacks and sent recruits across the border into Afghanistan. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs and Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman both said Friday that there is a growing consensus among credible observers that Mehsud died in the strike, which targeted a relatives home. A militant commander and aide to Mehsud also said Friday that the leader is dead. Gibbs described Mehsud as a murderous thug. He said: 'If he is dead, without a doubt, the people of Pakistan will be safer as a result.'"

Pelosi Shouted At In Denver

The Denver Post reports that Pelosi was visiting a Denver clinic and that the visit "came at a time when the national debate over health care has escalated into a figurative shouting match. The shouting match became a literal reality outside the clinic Thursday, as people skeptical of more government involvement in health care traded chants and slogans with others who support sweeping reforms."

Physicians Jam Meeting In Houston: "Concerned About What This Will Cost Us "

The Houston Chronicle reports that "physicians jammed a town hall meeting in The Woodlands on Thursday, expressing fears about the cost and effectiveness of a health care reform bill that could come up for a vote in Congress as early as September. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, hosted the meeting attended by about 90 physicians at Memorial Hermann Hospital-The Woodlands."

“The bottom line is that doctors don't want socialized medicine — another flawed health care system like Medicare. They don't believe it will lower the costs or improve quality,” Brady said. “Medicare is already going bankrupt and not quality care. It also shifts medical costs onto other paying customers. It needs to be fixed first.”

“I am very concerned about what this will cost us in terms of dollars,” said Dr. William Parker, the chief medical officer where the meeting was held. “Before this week, they did not tell us any details of the plan. We've had too little time to read, digest and discuss something that will be such a major overhaul of the health care system.”

Number Of Americans Receiving Food Stamps Hits Record At 34 Million

Rueters reports that "for the first time, more than 34 million Americans received food stamps, which help poor people buy groceries, government figures said on Thursday, a sign of the longest and one of the deepest recessions since the Great Depression. Enrollment surged by 2 percent to reach a record 34.4 million people, or one in nine Americans, in May, the latest month for which figures are available. It was the sixth month in a row that enrollment set a record. Every state recorded a gain in participation from April. Florida had the largest increase at 4.2 percent."

Food stamp enrollment monthly total:

May 34.409 million

April 33.758 million

March 33.157 million

February 32.556 million

January 32.205 million

December 2008 31.784 million

November 2008 31.097 million

September 2008 31.586 million

White House Officially Drops "War On Terrorrism," "Global War," And "Jihadists" As Acceptable Terms

The Washington Times reports that "it's official. The U.S. is no longer engaged in a 'war on terrorism.' Neither is it fighting 'jihadists' or in a 'global war.' President Obama's top homeland security and counterterrorism official took all three terms off the table of acceptable words inside the White House during a speech Thursday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. 'The President does not describe this as a 'war on terrorism,'' said John Brennan, head of the White House homeland security office, who outlined a 'new way of seeing' the fight against terrorism. The only terminology that Mr. Brennan said the administration is using is that the U.S. is 'at war with al Qaeda.'"

Senate Confirms Sonia "Wise Latina" Sotomayor To Supreme Court

The AP reports that "the Senate confirmed Sonia Sotomayor Thursday as the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court. The vote was 68-31 for Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's first high court nominee. She becomes the 111th justice and just the third woman to serve."

ADF Plans To Appeal Oklahoma Ten Commandments Case To U.S. Supreme Court

The Alliance Defense Fund reports that "in a 6-to-6 decision, the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit Thursday narrowly decided not to review a three-judge panel’s determination that a Ten Commandments display at the Haskell County, Oklahoma, Courthouse is unconstitutional. Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund plan to appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit to have the monument removed on behalf of a man who claims he was offended by it. In August 2006, a federal district court judge ruled that the presence of the Ten Commandments monument on the Haskell County Courthouse lawn was constitutional. The courthouse lawn area also includes memorials to veterans of World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War; an Unmarked Graves monument; a Choctaw Indian Tribe Monument; as well as numerous other items commemorating significant events. The ACLU then appealed the decision to a three-judge panel of the 10th Circuit, which reversed the district court’s ruling in June. ADF attorneys appealed to the full court for review."

In a dissenting opinion accompanying the order in Green v. Haskell County Board of Commissioners, Judge Paul J. Kelly, joined by others, wrote, “The court’s decision in this case perpetuates a regrettable misapprehension of the Establishment Clause: that recognition of the role of religion in this country’s founding, history, traditions, and laws is to be strictly excluded from the civic sphere.... The opinion strongly suggests that Ten Commandments displays authorized by small-town commissioners who harbor personal religious beliefs are unconstitutional establishments of religion. Such a conclusion is not only inconsistent with the original meaning of the Establishment Clause, but is also plainly contrary to the Supreme Court’s precedent in Van Orden v. Perry.”

AP: Obama's Government Insurance Would Cover Abortions

The AP reports that "health care legislation before Congress would allow a new government-sponsored insurance plan to cover abortions, a decision that would affect millions of women and recast federal policy on the divisive issue. Federal funds for abortions are now restricted to cases involving rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother. Abortion opponents say those restrictions should carry over to any health insurance sold through a new marketplace envisioned under the legislation, an exchange where people would choose private coverage or the public plan."

Yemeni Islamic Cleric Deported For Raising Money For Terrorists In Brooklyn Mosques

The New York Daily News reports that "a Yemeni cleric whose conviction for raising cash for terrorists at Brooklyn mosques was reversed is expected to plead guilty and be deported, prosecutors said Wednesday. Mohammad Al Hasan Al-Moayad, the self-described 'spiritual leader' of Osama Bin Laden, will be going back to Yemen, not a federal prison where he was serving 75 years before the U.S. Court of Appeals threw out the conviction last fall. Co-defendant Mohammed Zayed, serving a 45-year sentence when the convictions were tossed out, also will plead guilty as part of the deal with the Brooklyn U.S. attorney's office. Both will be sentenced to time served. The men have been jailed about seven years since being busted in Germany and extradited to the U.S. 'Retrial in this matter might be significantly delayed in light of defendant Al-Moayad's rapidly deteriorating health and the pleas provide a certain and prompt resolution,' Assistant U.S. Attorneys Pamela Chen and Jeffrey Knox said in a letter to Judge Dora Irizarry. Al-Moayad, 60, suffers from hepatitis C, cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes and his 'long-term prognosis under current conditions is poor,' the prosecutors said. Before the convictions were reversed, prosecutors had cited the case as a textbook example of how accused terrorists could be successfully tried in federal courts instead of military tribunals."

AP: Republicans "Troubled" By Obama's Policy Toward Israel

The AP reports that a U.S. delegation of Republican congressman visiting Israel said that the Obama administration's policy on Israel is misguided, puts too much emphasis on the issue of settlements and ignores the bigger threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. The AP reports that minority whip Eric Cantor from Virginia, the only Jewish Republican in Congress, led the delegation of 25 Republicans saying their weeklong mission to Israel is designed to show solidarity with the Jewish state and promote Mideast peace. The AP writes that "Cantor said that instead of focusing on issues such as Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank, Obama should concentrate on 'the primary issue of import ... and that is the existential threat that Iran poses not only to the state of Israel but to the United States.' The congressman said he is 'concerned about what the White House has been signaling of late.'... Cantor and others supported Israel's handling of the eviction of two Arab families from a house in east Jerusalem earlier this week, a move criticized by the European Union and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. 'I don't think we, in America, would want another country telling us how to implement and execute our laws,' Cantor said. The Obama administration is pressuring Israel to freeze all settlement activity on lands the Palestinians claim for a future state."

Court Denies Bail To Homegrown North Carolina Jihadists

The AFP reports that "A federal magistrate denied bail Wednesday for six of eight terror suspects accused of a wide-ranging conspiracy to attack targets in multiple countries, including Israel. Magistrate Judge William Webb reached his decision after hearing from federal prosecutors and defense attorneys during proceedings held Tuesday and early Wednesday. Prosecutors put an FBI special agent on the stand and played several secret recordings of alleged ringleader Daniel Patrick Boyd. The recordings and other evidence -- including a cache of firearms and more than 27,000 rounds of ammunition -- demonstrated that Boyd posed a grave threat to the public if released on bond, said prosecutor Jason Kellhofer. Boyd, 39, has been shown, through the evidence presented, to be a dangerous individual, said Kellhofer, who is with the US Justice Department's Counterterrorism Section. His alleged accomplices in the plan to wage 'jihad' or holy war on various sites around the world included his sons Dylan, 22, and Zakariya, 20; Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, 22; Hysen Sherifi, 24; and Ziyad Yaghi, 21."

Human Rights Watch Report Actually Accuses Hamas Of War Crimes

The AP reports that the usually anti-Israel Human Rights Watch has written a 31-page report focusing "on Hamas' actions in connection with Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza that ended in late January. Human Rights Watch, as well as other groups, have previously accused Israel of committing war crimes during the offensive aimed at stopping Palestinian rocket fire. 'Hamas rocket attacks targeting Israeli civilians are unlawful and unjustifiable, and amount to war crimes,' said Iain Levine of Human Rights Watch. But the report stopped short of accusing Hamas militants of war crimes, with officials saying only a court could make that determination... Hamas militants fired hundreds of rockets at southern Israeli towns, forcing thousands of civilians to hide in shelters or to flee. Many of those rockets were filmed by Israeli army drones and seen by foreign observers being launched from crowded Palestinian neighborhoods."

Fatah Congress Unanimously Concludes Israel Was Behind Arafat's Death

Ynetnews reports that five years after former Palestinian leader and terrorist Yasser Arafat's death, the "moderate" Fatah Congress has unanimously concluded Israel was behind it and set an up inquiry commission to probe the matter. Ynetnews reports that "The members of the commission will be appointed at a later date, but Arafat's nephew, Nasser al-Kidwa is expected to head to commission."

Former Dem Congressman William "Cold Cash" Jefferson Sentenced To Twenty Years For Bribery, Racketeering, And Money Laundering

The AP reports that the former Democrat "Louisiana congressman accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes was convicted in federal court Wednesday in a case in which agents famously found $90,000 stashed in his freezer. William Jefferson, a Democrat who had represented parts of New Orleans for almost 20 years, was stoic as the verdict was read and had little to say afterward... Prosecutors contended Jefferson accepted more than $400,000 in bribes and sought millions more in exchange for brokering business deals in Africa. After a two-month trial, jurors took five days to convict him on 11 of 16 counts that also included racketeering and money laundering. He was acquitted on the other five. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Lytle said Jefferson could face more than 20 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines. Jefferson had been under investigation since March 2005. In August that year, FBI agents searched his Washington home and found the cash in his freezer, wrapped in foil and hidden in boxes of frozen pie crust. Prosecutors said he had planned to use the money to pay a bribe to the then-vice president of Nigeria to secure a multimillion dollar telecommunications deal there, an accusation Jefferson denied."

AIPAC "Deeply Disappointed By The Obama Administration's Choice To Award A Presidential Medal Of Freedom To Mary Robinson"

AIPAC took the unusual step of publicly criticizing the White House, saying in part:

"AIPAC is deeply disappointed by the Obama administration's choice to award a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Mary Robinson. AIPAC respectfully calls on the administration to firmly, fully and publicly repudiate her views on Israel and her long public record of hostility and one-sided bias against the Jewish state. Robinson is widely known for the high-profile role she played in leading the deeply flawed U.N. Human Rights Commission and for presiding over the U.N.'s Durban Conference on Racism, which the United States boycotted for its unprecedented hostility to Israel and its final outcome document that equated Zionism with racism. ...In addition to Robinson's dishonorable role in the Durban debacle, her tenure on the UNHRC was deeply flawed, and her conduct marred by extreme, one-sided anti-Israel sentiment..."

Dem Congressman Elliot Engel Speaks Out Against Obama Honoring Anti-Israel And Anti-American Mary Robinson

New York Democratic Congressman Eliot Engel said that honoring former UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom was "a mistake." In an interview with journalist Jennifer Rubin, Engel said that Robinson "always managed to find a moral equivalence" between Israel and the terrorism Israel faces, and that Robinson "epitomizes all that is wrong with the United Nations" and its anti-Israel bias. Engel went further in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, saying that he hoped the administration would rescind the award.

Zogby Poll: Most Americans, In Fact More Democrats Than Republicans, Want Strengths And Weaknesses Of Darwinism Taught In Schools

CNSNews.com reports that "a Zogby poll commissioned by the Seattle-based Discovery Institute says more than three-quarters of Americans would like teachers to have the freedom to discuss both the strengths and weaknesses of Darwinian evolution, with an even higher number reported among Democrats."

Respondents were given the two following statements:

Statement A: “Biology teachers should teach only Darwin’s theory of evolution and the scientific evidence that supports it.”

Statement B: “Biology teachers should teach Darwin’s theory of evolution, but also the scientific evidence against it.”

CNSNews.com reports that the Zogby poll indicated that "78 percent said Statement B came closest to their own point of view on the issue, representing a 9 percent increase over 2006, the last time the question was asked. More striking, though, was the finding that 82 percent of Democrats also chose statement B, versus 73 percent of Republicans."

Times Of London: "Iran Is Ready To Build An N-Bomb - It Is Just Waiting For The Ayatollah's Order"

The Times of London reports that Western intelligence sources have told the newspaper that "Iran has perfected the technology to create and detonate a nuclear warhead and is merely awaiting the word from its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei... The sources said that Iran completed a research programme to create weaponised uranium in the summer of 2003 and that it could feasibly make a bomb within a year of an order from its Supreme Leader... They said that, should Ayatollah Khamenei approve the building of a nuclear device, it would take six months to enrich enough uranium and another six months to assemble the warhead. The Iranian Defence Ministry has been running a covert nuclear research department for years, employing hundreds of scientists, researchers and metallurgists in a multibillion-dollar programme to develop nuclear technology alongside the civilian nuclear programme."

Commentary On The "Birther" Conspiracy Theory

David Freddoso points out that "twenty-eight percent of Republicans believe President Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States, and 30 percent are "not sure," according to this poll. But before liberals begin to smirk, here's a poll from 2007, in which 35 percent of Democrats said that President Bush knew in advance about the 9/11 attacks, and 26 percent were not sure. So if 58 percent of Republicans are living in a delusional fantasy world because they are out of power, then 61 percent of Democrats were doing the same thing until just recently (perhaps they still are). It's a clean, apples-to-apples comparison with a clear lesson: People get a bit kooky when they're out of power, Democrats about 3 points kookier -- which is probably within the margin of error."

Yet for some reason I doubt that MSNBC and the mainstream media in general provided the 9-11 Truthers nearly the same attention it has been devoting to the Birthers. Why would that be the case? Bias, perhaps?
