CBS reports that "if you planned to check out a library book, visit a city clinic or have your garbage picked up on Monday, you're out of luck. The City of Chicago will basically be closed for business on Aug. 17, a reduced-service day in which most city employees are off without pay, according to a release from the Office of Budget and Management. Harry Reid Calls Town Hall Health Care Protesters "Evil-Mongers"
Harry Reid has said in the closing speech of his annual clean energy conference that health care protesters at town hall events were “evil-mongers.” He said that they were disrupting the town halls with “lies, innuendo and rumor."
He later tried toning down his rhetoric by saying that the phrase "evil-mongers" was “an original with me. I maybe could have been less descriptive.” He also said, “I doubt that you’ll hear it from me again.” But a few minutes later, he could not stop himself. “I feel I haven’t done anything to embarrass them,” Reid said of his children. “Except maybe call somebody an evil-monger.”

Former PA Security Chief In Gaza Muhammad Dahlan: We Never Asked Hamas To Recognize Israel Since Fatah Has Never Recognized Israel Either
The following is an excerpt from an interview with Muhammad Dahlan, former PA security chief in Gaza, which aired on Al-Arabiya TV on August 4, 2009:
"First of all, the store of lies told by Hamas officials is a bottomless pit. No one raised the issue of recognizing Israel or any other political issue in any previous meeting. I have said openly that Fatah itself did not recognize Israel, but that it was the PLO that recognized Israel. Therefore, we did not and will not demand that Hamas as a political, or fascist, movement recognize Israel or not. This is Hamas’s business, since the Fatah movement did not recognize Israel either."

House Majority Whip Rep. James Clyburn Compares Health Care Protesters To "Snarling Dogs Going After" Those Who Marched For Civil Rights

And I do believe that health care for all is — a civil right,” the House Majority Whip argued. “And I think that is why you see this kind of activity. This is an attempt on the part of some to deny the establishment of a civil right.”

Yale Press Bans Images Of Muhammad Cartoons In New Book About Muhammad Cartoons
The New York Times reports that after Yale Press consulted with "two dozen authorities, including diplomats and experts on Islam and counterterrorism, and the recommendation was unanimous: The book, 'The Cartoons That Shook the World,' should not include the 12 Danish drawings that originally appeared in September 2005. What’s more, they suggested that the Yale press also refrain from publishing any other illustrations of the prophet that were to be included, specifically, a drawing for a children’s book; an Ottoman print; and a sketch by the 19th-century artist Gustave Doré of Muhammad being tormented in Hell, an episode from Dante’s 'Inferno' that has been depicted by Botticelli, Blake, Rodin and DalÃ. The book’s author, Jytte Klausen, a Danish-born professor of politics at Brandeis University, in Waltham, Mass., reluctantly accepted Yale University Press’s decision not to publish the cartoons. But she was disturbed by the withdrawal of the other representations of Muhammad. All of those images are widely available, Ms. Klausen said by telephone, adding that 'Muslim friends, leaders and activists thought that the incident was misunderstood, so the cartoons needed to be reprinted so we could have a discussion about it.' The book is due out in November."

White House Ignores Criticism And Honors 2001 Durban Conference Chair Robinson
The Jerusalem post reports that "despite fierce opposition from pro-Israel advocates, including Jewish groups and bipartisan lawmakers, the White House awarded its highest civilian honor Wednesday to Mary Robinson, a former UN official who presided over the 2001 Durban conference on racism... It was an award that riled critics who slammed her role in the Durban conference, known for its anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric, as well as her track record on Israel during her tenure as UN High Commissioner on Human Rights. On Wednesday, President Barack Obama called Robinson a 'crusader' for women and those without a voice who 'illuminated a better future for our world.' But as late as Wednesday morning, critics urged the president to reconsider honoring Robinson. And one day earlier, 45 Republican lawmakers wrote a letter to President Obama that cited Robinson's 'failed, biased record' at the United Nations. 'Awarding this nation's highest civilian honor to Mary Robinson risks putting our imprimatur on a biased record that contravenes our nation's deepest values,' they wrote. A Democratic member of Congress, Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, separately called the award 'a mistake.' Indeed, critics said the Obama administration's decision to honor Robinson reflected a detachment from mainstream American public opinion on foreign policy. 'Those in the administration who recommended her either ignored her anti-Israel history, or missed it entirely, as they either ignored or overlooked her hostility toward America's role in promoting international peace and security. Or perhaps they share Ms. Robinson's views,' wrote John Bolton, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations, in the Wall Street Journal on Monday. 'The administration's tin ear to the furor over Ms. Robinson underlines how deep that detachment really is,' he wrote."

Federal Deficit Climbed Higher Into Record Territory In July, Hitting $1.27 Trillion With Two Months Remaining In The Budget Year
The Associated Press reports that "the federal deficit climbed higher into record territory in July, hitting $1.27 trillion with two months remaining in the budget year. The Treasury Department said Wednesday that the July deficit totaled $180.7 billion, slightly more than the $177.5 billion economists had expected. The Obama administration is projecting that when the current budget year ends on Sept. 30, the imbalance will total $1.84 trillion, more than four times last year's record-high. The soaring deficits have raised worries among foreign owners of U.S. Treasury securities including the Chinese, the largest holder of such debt. Massive amounts of government spending to combat the recession and stabilize the U.S. financial system have pushed the deficit higher. The cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with depleted government tax revenues, also are major factors. The July deficit reflected government spending of $332.2 billion, a record amount for any month and up from outlays of $263.3 billion in July 2008. Of that increase, about $25 billion reflected the fact that Aug. 1 was a Saturday this year, requiring many government benefit checks to be sent out earlier and counted as spending in July." Tweet

USA Today Fact Checks Obama's Health Care Town Hall
The following Obama lies were caught by the USA Today report on Obama's health care town hall. They are not written into the body of the article, but provided as a sidebar. Here is the USA Today's list of Obama's "debatable assertions":
• "Under the reform we're proposing, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan."
Not necessarily. In an analysis of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee bill, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that 10 million workers could lose employer-provided benefits and would have to find other insurance.
• "Insurance companies basically get $177 billion of taxpayer money to provide services that Medicare already provides."
About 10.2 million Medicare recipients are in Medicare Advantage. Under that program, the government pays insurers a set amount per Medicare beneficiary. Obama ridiculed it as costly and redundant, but the plan provides additional benefits, such as vision, dental and hearing, to seniors and helps coordinate health care for those with chronic conditions, says Robert Zirkelbach at the trade association, America's Health Insurance Plans.
• "The rumor that's been circulating a lot lately is this idea that somehow the House of Representatives voted for 'death panels' that will basically pull the plug on Grandma. ... (T)he intention. .. was to give people more information so that they could handle issues of end-of-life care when they're ready, on their own terms. ... (O)ne of the chief sponsors of this bill originally was a Republican ... (Sen.) Johnny Isakson from Georgia."
Isakson issued a press release saying Obama misused his name. A provision he attached to a Senate health care bill would allow seniors to obtain help in formulating a living will something Isakson said is different from House language. The House bill would require Medicare to pay for end-of-life counseling sessions, but it would not mandate that anyone use the benefit.
• "AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare, OK?"
The AARP issued a press release to make it clear that it has not endorsed any particular health care proposal. "Indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate," AARP said.

Kissimmee, Florida's City Commission Backs Away From A Proposal To Add "In God We Trust" To The City's Logo
The Orlando Sentinel reports that the proposed ordinance to add "In God We Trust" to the city logo was withdrawn after Commissioner Art Otero told a reporter that he feared the country was moving toward "liberal postures such as homosexuality, gay marriage, abortion and the legalization of marijuana."
The Orlando Sentinel reports, however, that "Art Otero is not letting go of his effort to add the words 'In God We Trust' to the city logo and says he will take the initiative to a referendum if needed. An ordinance that added the motto passed on first reading through the City Commission last month but was withdrawn last week by the board, after Mayor Jim Swan said that Otero's comments had brought 'ridicule' on the city."

Ed Koch: The President's Decision To Honor Mary Robinson Is "One Of His Worse Mistakes To Date"
Life-long Democrat and former mayor of New York Ed Koch had this to say about Obama's decision to honor Mary Robinson:
"Mary Robinson is perceived by supporters of Israel as having engaged in anti-Semitic actions by her denigrating of Israel over the years, particularly at Durbin, South Africa. Anti-Semitism is exhibited when hostility is directed at Israel for reasons that would not be the basis of hostility to any other country engaging in the same actions. Mary Robinson now says that she has always been a friend of Israel. Some friend! Not until she by some actions and deeds, not simply words, convinces supporters of Israel of her good will towards Israel will she be seen as other than anti-Semitic. President Barack Obama, like every other person, makes mistakes. Awarding Mary Robinson the Medal of Freedomis one of his worst mistakes to date."

Top Iranian Figures Call For The Arrest And Punishment Of Opposition Leaders, Including Mir Hossein Mousavi
The Washington Post reports that in Iran "Revolutionary Guard generals, top politicians and senior clerics have called for the arrest and punishment of opposition leaders, including defeated presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, Iranian state media reported Sunday, while the national police chief acknowledged that protesters had been mistreated while in custody. The calls for arrests come as part of a crackdown against opposition activists who continue to dispute June’s presidential vote, which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad officially won in a landslide but which Mousavi and his supporters say was stolen.
In recent weeks, the government has staged mass trials in which activists have given controversial confessions, admitting involvement in elaborate, internationally backed plots to bring what prosecutors call 'a nonmilitary velvet revolution' to the Islamic republic. Opposition leaders have charged that the confessions are coerced and have vowed to continue the protests that have deeply unsettled Iran in recent weeks. 'In order to end this mayhem, they need to arrest, try and punish these political figures,' Gen. Yadollah Javani, head of the political office of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, advised the judicial system Sunday, according to state news agency IRNA. 'These individuals should be prosecuted, punished and tried as traitors.' He singled out Mousavi, fellow defeated candidate Mehdi Karroubi and former president Mohammad Khatami. The Revolutionary Guard is a force that plays a highly influential role in politics."

Republican Congressmen Blast Pelosi And Hoyer For Smearing Opponents Of Obamacare As "Un-American"
Rep. Mike Pence:
Rep. Tom Price:
House Minority Leader John Boehnor released the following statement:
“For months, House Democratic leaders have worked to silence any opposing views in this health care debate, both here in Washington and around the country where millions of Americans are struggling in this economy. Every poll taken in the last month shows that a majority of Americans are concerned about, if not outright opposed to, the Democrats’ plan because of the cost and consequences it would mean for their own health care. Each public forum should give every participant the opportunity to express their views, but to label Americans who are expressing vocal opposition to the Democrats’ plan 'un-American' is outrageous and reprehensible. The American people deserve answers to basic questions about whether the Democrats’ plan will increase health care costs, add to the deficit, increase taxes on middle-class families and small businesses, put government between doctors and patients, force anyone to lose their current health coverage, kill jobs, promote taxpayer-funded abortion, or cut Medicare. The fact is Democrats have not been able to address the very real concerns the American people have. It’s time for Democrats to start listening. When we return to Washington in September, Democrats should scrap their costly plan and finally work on bipartisan reforms that give Americans what they are seeking: better access to affordable care.”
