This is just astounding, not even in that a dead Democrat whooped a live Republican in a California State Senate race (58 percent to 36 percent), but that the Democrats continued shamelessly sending out mailers for this dead woman without telling anyone that she bit the dust. "The Republicans are trying to take unfair advantage of Jenny’s tragedy," said the mailer which intentionally omitted Oropeza's death. Apparently trying to let constituents know they were voting for a corpse is "trying to take unfair advantage" of your opponent's "tragedy." Unbelievable.
This is not the first time a dead Democrat defeated a live Republican. Democratic former Governor Mel Carnahan of Missouri died in a plane crash and still beat Senator John Ashcroft in 2000 (though things worked out just fine for Ashcroft because he was picked by President Bush to be the United States Attorney General). As bizarre as it is having a dead Democrat beat a live Republican for a US Senate seat, it would be impossible for Democrats in a US Senate race to pretend their candidate was still alive given the publicity US Senate races engender. This story out of California, however, is a whole new level of ridiculous given the Democratic mailer that was sent out after the candidate had already croaked. It just does not pass the smell test in my book for a local State Senate race.
Further, it's a perfect poster-child for how California voted in this midterm election.
