Democrat Senator Ben Nelson Voting No On Kagan, But For The Wrong Reason

ABC News reports that "Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson announced late Friday he would vote against the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan... Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson announced late Friday he would vote against the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan."

In a statement released this evening, Sen. Nelson said, "I have heard concerns from Nebraskans regarding Ms. Kagan, and her lack of a judicial record makes it difficult for me to discount the concerns raised by Nebraskans, or to reach a level of comfort that these concerns are unfounded. Therefore, I will not vote to confirm Ms. Kagan’s nomination."

In all honesty, this is the least of concerns regarding Elena Kagan. Republican appointees such as William Rehnquist also lacked a judicial record before the Supreme Court. The real problem is her judicial philosophy which makes a mockery of the constitution and abuses the judicial role. The problem is the radical actions she has taken while Dean at Harvard Law School to block military recruiters from partaking in the normal recruiting opportunities at the law school. She even challenged the Solomon Amendment passed by Congress which called for federal funds to be removed from educational institutions such as Harvard that refuse to allow full access to military recruiters. In her challenge to the Solomon Amendment, a unanimous Supreme Court rejected the arguments put forward by the likes of Elena Kagan. That means that her legal arguments were too outlandish for even Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It is this sort of record coupled with her judicial philosophy that should lead all Senators to vote against Elena Kagan.

Congressional Panel Hits Rangel With 13 Ethics Charges

The AP reports that "House investigators accused veteran New York Rep. Charles Rangel of 13 violations of congressional ethics standards on Thursday, throwing a cloud over his four-decade political career and raising worries for fellow Democrats about the fall elections. The allegations include failure to report rental income from vacation property in the Dominican Republic and hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional income and assets on his financial disclosure statements. Other charges focused on Rangel's use of congressional staff and stationery to raise money for a college center in New York named after him; accepting favors and benefits from the donors that may have influenced his congressional actions; use of a subsidized New York apartment as a campaign office instead of a residence; and misuse of the congressional free mail privilege."

Dem Congressman's Campaign Says Republican Opponent Is Supported By "A Lot Of Jewish Money"

The Observer reports that "in an effort to show that Grimm lacks support among voters in the district, which covers Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, the McMahon campaign compiled a list of Jewish donors to Grimm and provided it to The Politicker. The file, labeled “Grimm Jewish Money Q2,” for the second quarter fundraising period, shows a list of over 80 names, a half-dozen of which in fact do hail from Staten Island, and a handful of others that list Brooklyn as home... As a point of comparison, the campaign also provided in-district and out-of-district fundraising totals from McMahon and Grimm’s G.O.P primary opponent, Michael Allegretti. However, they did not provide an out-of-district campaign filing from Grimm, but only a file of Jewish donors to him."

“Where is Grimm’s money coming from,” said Jennifer Nelson, McMahon’s campaign spokeman. “There is a lot of Jewish money, a lot of money from people in Florida and Manhattan, retirees.”

Federal Court Issues Temporary Restraining Order

The AP reports that a "federal judge stepped into the fight over Arizona's immigration law at the last minute Wednesday, blocking the heart of the measure and defusing a confrontation between police and thousands of activists that had been building for months. Coming just hours before the law was to take effect, the ruling isn't the end. It sets up a lengthy legal battle that could end up before the Supreme Court — ensuring that a law that reignited the immigration debate, inspired similar measures nationwide, created fodder for political campaigns and raised tensions with Mexico will stay in the spotlight."

Russia Joins Iran In Condemning EU Sanctions Against Teheran Regime

The Christian Science Monitor reports that "Russia joined Iran in condemning new sanctions the European Union imposed Monday to curtail Tehran's nuclear ambitions. In a statement Tuesday, Russia said the EU's use of sanctions not approved by the UN Security Council is 'unacceptable,' Reuters reports. The EU's new sanctions, adopted Monday, put sharp limits on new oil and gas investment and curb financial links with Iran. Canada also slapped Iran with similar sanctions Monday, according to RTT News, and on June 24 the US Congress passed curbs on dealing with Iran's banking and energy sectors. Russia, as a veto-wielding member of the United Nations Security Council, has signed on to four rounds of sanctions against Iran already, but doesn't wish to take a harder line. Moscow said the EU's tough new sanctions were counter-productive and worked at cross-purposes with a six-nation effort – which includes Russia – to resolve the dispute over Tehran's nuclear program, according to the Associated Press."

Lawsuit Claims College Ordered Student To Alter Religious Views On Homosexuality, Or Be Dismissed

Fox News reports that a "graduate student in Georgia is suing her university after she was told she must undergo a remediation program due to her beliefs on homosexuality and transgendered persons. The student, Jennifer Keeton, 24, has been pursuing a master's degree in school counseling at Augusta State University since 2009, but school officials have informed her that she'll be dismissed from the program unless she alters her 'central religious beliefs on human nature and conduct,' according to a civil complaint filed last week... Keeton, according to the lawsuit, was informed by school officials in late May that she would be asked to take part in a remediation plan due to faculty concerns regarding her beliefs pertaining to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues."

"[Augusta State University] faculty have promised to expel Miss Keeton from the graduate Counselor Education Program not because of poor academic showing or demonstrated deficiencies in clinical performance, but simply because she has communicated both inside and outside the classroom that she holds to Christian ethical convictions on matters of human sexuality and gender identity," the 43-page lawsuit reads.

"The faculty identifies Miss Keeton's views as indicative of her improper professional disposition to persons of such populations," the lawsuit reads.

American Jewish Committee: "Oliver Stone Has Outed Himself As An Anti-Semite"

The American Jewish Committee condemned the film director Oliver Stone for an interview with London’s Sunday Times in which he railed against “Jewish domination of the media.”

“By invoking this grotesque, toxic stereotype, Oliver Stone has outed himself as an anti-Semite,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris. “For all of Stone’s progressive pretensions, his remark is no different from one of the drunken, Jew-hating rants of his fellow Hollywood celebrity, Mel Gibson.”

Anti-Defamtation League weighed saying that "This is the most absurd kind of analysis and shows the extent to which Oliver Stone is willing to propound his anti-Semitic and conspiratorial views."

Elton John Calls Musicians Boycotting Arizona "(Expletive) Twits"

Arizona's Daily Star reports that "Elton John didn't mince words in slamming his fellow musicians for boycotting Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law. From the stage at his sold-out Tucson Arena concert Thursday night, John savored a few choice, not-so-family-friendly words": "We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are (expletive) twits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the (expletive) with these people?" The Arizona Daily Start reports that "John has never been one to cave into political pressure from his musical colleagues. He ignored an artist boycott of Israel in June over the flotilla fiasco and played a show in Tel Aviv. He also played Rush Limbaugh's latest wedding reception in early June, which drew the ire of gays and lesbians. Limbaugh is vehemently anti-gay marriage; John is married to his longtime partner David Furnish."

Former CIA Director Says Military Action Against Iran Now Seems "Inexorable"

The AP reports that a "former CIA director says military action against Iran now seems more likely because no matter what the U.S. does diplomatically, Tehran keeps pushing ahead with its suspected nuclear program. Michael Hayden, a CIA chief under President George W. Bush, says that during his tenure a strike was 'way down the list' of options. But he tells CNN's 'State of the Union' that such action now 'seems inexorable.' He predicts Iran will build its program to the point where it's just below having an actual weapon. Hayden says that would be as destabilizing to the region as the real thing."
