Tony Hamden: John Boehner Is "The Second Of 12 Kids From Ohio Who Is Barack Obama's Elitist Target "

Hamden writes in the Telegraph that "President Barack Obama is doing his best to turn Representative John Boehner, the House minority leader, into Public Enemy Number One. If Republicans win back the House of Representatives in November, as polls indicate, he will replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. In a recent speech, Mr Obama mentioned Mr Boehner by name nine times. A fundraising email sent out from BarackObama.com this week stated that corporate interests and lobbyists 'have put all their chips on one man: Congressman John Boehner'. Democrats have started a BeatBoehner.com website that claims he spent $1 million on "luxury hotels, exclusive golf resorts and gourmet dining for himself and his fat-cat contributors". On the I-75 freeway outside Cincinnati, a huge poster showing a tanned Mr Boehner playing golf accuses him of teeing off 119 times in a year. Yet Mr Boehner's life story is the type of classic up-by-the-bootstraps tale of the American Dream that can put a tear in a voter's eye. As his story becomes better known, the Democrats could even be drawing favourable attention upon him. Right now, most Americans have never heard of Mr Boehner, and fewer still can pronounce his name, which rhymes with Rayner. The alleged elitist country club Republican is an Ohio Congressman who grew up in near poverty. His sister Lynda Meineke, who is 51, is a waitress and bar tender at Andy's Cafe in Carthage, Ohio, a family business that was founded by their grandfather Andy Boehner in 1938. As a child, one of Mr Boehner's jobs was to mop the floor. Sitting outside the bar this week, sipping a bottle of Bud Light and smoking a cigarette, Mrs Meineke described her childhood as 'cramped' but happy. 'We learned how to share. If there was a toy, it wasn't just for you but for all the younger ones.' Mr Boehner, 61, is the second of 12 who grew up in a German-Irish family in Reading, Ohio, just outside Cincinnati. All but two of them still live within a few miles of each other. Two are unemployed and most of the others have blue-collar jobs. The future Congressman started work as a janitor and took seven years to get his degree – the first in the family to do so – because he had several jobs to pay his way. He joined a plastics and packaging company, rising to president before entering local politics by being elected to the town board. The family house on Hill Street initially had two bedrooms with Mr Boehner and three brothers sleeping in one, their sister in another and their parents on a pull-out bed in the living room. Their father Earl later built a three-bedroom extension. Mrs Meineke, whose husband is an unemployed builder, still lives in the modest house. She remembers her father rising at dawn to go off to the cafĂ©, which he ran with his twin brother and was a favourite with truck drivers. 'Then my mother would get up before all of us, and drink coffee and listen to the radio, packing our lunches and writing our names on all the brown bags. Then she'd start waking us up. You knew that if you didn't get up you'd be cutting your time in the bathroom in half. Sometimes, the boys had to go outside and pee by the tree.' Mr Boehner's deep tan is often mocked by Democrats. At a dinner last year, Mr Obama said: 'He is a person of colour, although not a colour that appears in the natural world.' Like Mr Obama, Mr Boehner is a keen golfer and a smoker. His sister sniggered at the suggestion her brother might ever have been on a tanning bed. The 'dark hair and olive skin', she said, came from her mother. Bob Boehner, 62, the oldest of the 12, who sells real estate and is 'looking for work', said: 'We were conservative because we had to be. There wasn't the money to spend frivolously on things. We grew our own vegetables up on the hill. We learned early on that if you wanted something you had to go out and work for it.' His brother's childhood, he thinks, was good training for Congress, where, if he becomes Speaker, he will have 435 members to control. 'He tried to make the younger ones do their homework and get the room cleaned up. He was somewhat of an authority figure to the younger ones. John is still an everyday person and we need more people like that in Congress because too many people there have never had a job and never had to balance a budget before.' Some Republicans believe that Mr Obama has allowed his personal animus to drive an anti-Boehner campaign that could well backfire. Shortly after Mr Obama won the 2008 election, Mr Boehner described him as a 'chicken shit' for voting 'present' so many times in the Illinois Senate. Reacting to Mr Obama's health care bill, which narrowly passed but appears to be an electoral millstone around Democratic necks, Mr Boehner shouted 'Hell, no you can't!' on the House floor."

Sixth Muslim Man Arrested In UK Pope Assasination Plot

Reuters reports that anti-terrorism "police, on high alert during a visit by Pope Benedict to the British capital, arrested six men on Friday on suspicion of preparing an attack. Police moved quickly to make the pre-dawn arrests of five men who worked as street cleaners in the area in central London near parliament where the pontiff later spoke. A sixth suspect was arrested about eight hours later but it was not clear if he worked for the same cleaning company contracted by the Westminster area of London."

$111 Milliion In Stimulus Spent In Los Angeles, But Only "Created Or Retained 55 Jobs"

Fox News reports that "more than a year after Congress approved $800 billion in stimulus funds, the Los Angeles city controller has released a 40-page report on how the city spent its share, and the results are not living up to expectations... According to the audit, the Los Angeles Department of Public Works spent $70 million in stimulus funds -- in return, it created seven private sector jobs and saved seven workers from layoffs. Taxpayer cost per job: $1.5 million. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation created even fewer jobs per dollar, spending $40 million but netting just nine jobs. Taxpayer cost per job: $4.4 million."

"I'm disappointed that we've only created or retained 55 jobs after receiving $111 million," said Wendy Greuel, the city's controller. "With our local unemployment rate over 12 percent we need to do a better job cutting red tape and putting Angelenos back to work."

Five Suspected Islamist Terrorists Arrested Over Pope Assassination Plot In UK

The Telegraph reports that the five "men were arrested during raids at 5.45am at a rubbish depot in central London based on an intelligence tip off received overnight. The suspects, aged 26, 27, 36, 40 and 50 were arrested by officers from Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. They are said to be from a variety of nationalities including a number of Algerian origin. The depot where they worked is less than a mile from Hyde Park where the Pope was due to hold a prayer vigil tomorrow evening. As street cleaners they would have been able to move relatively freely and inconspicuously through the London crowds."

Fatwa Issued Calling For Death Of Artist Who Started "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day"

The Seattle Weekly reports that you "may have noticed that Molly Norris' comic is not in the paper this week. That's because there is no more Molly. The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, "going ghost": moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program—except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab. It's all because of the appalling fatwa issued against her this summer, following her infamous 'Everybody Draw Mohammed Day' cartoon. Norris views the situation with her customary sense of the world's complexity, and absurdity. When FBI agents, on a recent visit, instructed her to always keep watch for anyone following her, she responded, 'Well, at least it'll keep me from being so self-involved!" It was, she says, the first time the agents managed a smile. She likens the situation to cancer—it might basically be nothing, it might be urgent and serious, it might go away and never return, or it might pop up again when she least expects it. We're hoping the religious bigots go into full and immediate remission, and we wish her the best."

Palestinian Authority Officials Are Saying One Thing In Arabic, And Another In English

Khaled Abu Toameh reports that a "number of senior Palestinian officials who do not have much credibility among their own people are now trying to sell themselves to Israelis as 'partners for peace.' This is the same group of Palestinians who in the past advised Yasser Arafat to reject then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak's offer during the botched Camp David summit in 2000. They were among Arafat's inner circle when he walked out of the Camp David summit and initiated the 'Second Intifada.' These are also the same officials who, back then, justified the eruption of the intifada as a 'natural response' to Israel's refusal to comply with 100% of the Palestinians' demands. Saeb Erekat, Jibril Rajoub and Yasser Abed Rabbo are now trying to persuade the Israeli public that Israel does have partners for peace on the Palestinian side. And who are the new-old partners? Erekat, Rajoub and Abed Rabbo, of course. With the help of US taxpayers' dollars, the three, together with other Palestinian officials, are sending their 'peace' messages to the Israelis in English. The campaign, according to Palestinians, is being funded by the US Agency for International Development [USAID].The campaign targets only the Israeli public. No similar messages are being sent to the Palestinians despite promises that they would.... In just the past week, Palestinian Authority officials have even escalated their rhetoric by issuing daily threats to withdraw from the US-sponsored direct talks that were launched in Washington last week. In Arabic, Mahmoud Abbas and his top officials are telling Palestinians that they would never make 'even one concession' to Israel during the peace talks. In Arabic, they are saying that they will never recognize Israel as a Jewish state; will never relinquish the right of return of millions of refugees to Israel, and will never make any compromises on Jerusalem."

Five Muslim Men Planned Attack On Australian Army Base

The Herald Sun reports that five "Muslim men planned an armed terrorist attack on a Sydney army base to further the cause of Islam by killing as many people as possible, a Supreme Court jury heard today. Prosecutor Nick Robinson SC said the men took a number of steps in preparation for the attack, including sending one of their number to Somalia to obtain a fatwa or religious decree to permit the plan to go ahead. Mr Robinson said members of the group used the code 'the man who has gone to Perth' when talking about Yacqub Khayre’s trip in search of a fatwa. The plan was that five or six men armed with high powered weapons would enter the Holsworthy Army Base and fire at and kill as many people as possible before they were either killed or overwhelmed. They planned to use weapons that could fire at least 60 bullets. On trial are Saney Edow Aweys, 26, Mr Khayre, 22, Abdirahman Mohamud Ahmed, 25, and Wissam Mahmoud Fattal, 33,and Nayef El Sayed, 25. They have all pleaded not guilty to conspiring with each other and persons unknown between February 1 and August 4 last year to do acts in preparation for, or planning a terrorist act or acts."

Former Head Of The Federal Reserve Greenspan: Stimulus Package "Worked Far Less Than Expected”

The Wall Street Journal reports that the "former head of the Federal Reserve said fiscal stimulus efforts have fallen far short of expectations, and the government now needs to get out of the way and allow businesses and markets to power the recovery."

“We have to find a way to simmer down the extent of activism that is going on” with government stimulus spending “and allow the economy to heal” itself, former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan told a gathering held at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Wednesday.

At this point, “we’d probably be better off doing less than more” because “you’d be far better off to allow the normal market forces to operate here,” Greenspan said. That’s largely because stimulus spending is not proving as effective as many had hoped. “To the extent the evidence suggests very large deficits concurrently crowd out capital investment, there is a debit to the stimulus program that is somewhere between a third and a half of what the gross stimulus is,” he said

Likud Knesset Member Danny Danon: " 'Partial [Settlement] Freeze Unacceptable - We Will Fight It'

Israel National News reports that "Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is under intense pressure from Washington to extend the settlement building moratorium, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanding it should continue ahead of talks which began today in Sharm el-Sheikh. On the home front, Likud Ministers and members of Knesset have started to publicly pressure Netanyahu to keep his word on ending the freeze as scheduled on Sept. 26. Four Likud MKs have reportedly threatened to vote against the upcoming state budget if the freeze is extended." The settlement freeze on all West Bank construction has been in effect for nearly ten months. Israel adopted this freeze under the faulty assumption that it would earn Israel good will in Washington and elsewhere. However, it did not such thing. American pressure then shifted to construction in East Jerusalem with diplomatic tensions far higher than they have been in a long time. Now right-wing members of the Knesset are promising to block any attempt to extend this moratorium on construction, realizing that it achieved absolutely nothing, and probably had the opposite effect from that which was intended.

As MK Danny Danon correctly said: "The moratorium was a poor decision and I told the Prime Minister 10 months ago... I would not accept any partial freeze. It is unacceptable and the Prime Minister knows that... We feel that the Prime Minister knows that there is no partner for peace in Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas], but that he is still playing the game, and does not really believe a deal can be reached... You need to find a partner. We see that Abu Mazen has no control. We need to be very realistic. When there will be a real leadership, then we can negotiate. I prefer not to play a game of wishful thinking in order to satisfy the White House."

Israeli Police Report Terrorists Fired Phosphorus Shells Into Israel Against Geneva Conventions

Israeli police report that among the regular barrage of rockets into Israel were included two phosphorus shells. Two phosphorous mortars were fired at southern Israel from Gaza on Wednesday, Police Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told The Jerusalem Post. The Jerusalem Post reports that "Israel Police said it was not the first time that phosphorous shells had been fired at Israel from Gaza."

"A police bomb disposal team examined a number of mortars that were fired today. We can confirm that two out of the nine mortars contained phosphorous," Rosenfeld added.

Haim Yalin, head of the Eshkol Regional Council where the phosphorous mortars landed, reacted sharply to the news of the phosphorus mortar attacks. "These weapons have been banned by the Geneva convention. They cause burns among victims and they kill. This is an agricultural area, and we now have to explain to farmers how to deal with burns in light of the phosphorus mortars," he told the Post.

"So long as this autonomous Iranian entity in Gaza continues to exist, we will be fired on. We have received only fundamentalism from Gaza and fire," Yalin said. "There are 50,000 residents who live in this area who are thirsty for peace and a normal life. And we face a Hamas entity that is unwilling to recognize Israel. We are civilians, farmers, students, all being fired on indiscriminately."

Harry Reid Adding Illegal Alien Amnesty Measure And Ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" To Defense Bill

The AP reports that "U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday he wants to attach an amendment to a defense policy bill that would help young people in the United States illegally become legal U.S. residents. The Nevada Democrat said at a Capitol news conference that the legislation known as the DREAM Act is long overdue. He would not say whether he has the votes for the amendment. The act would allow young people who attend college or join the military to become legal U.S. residents. The young people must have come to the country when they were under 16 years of age and have been in the country five years. Those who join the military must serve at least two years and complete two years of college. Democrats have also promised gay rights groups an end to the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy' that bars gays from serving openly in the military. That is in the bill that Reid said he will try to take up next week."

Tea Party Backed Candidate O'Donnell Beats Longtime Republican Congressman Mike Castle In Senate Primary Race, Republican Establishment Unhappy

Justice Stephen Breyer Says He Would Think About Whether Koran Burning Can Be Banned By The Government As "Shouting Fire In A Crowded Theater"

ABC News reports that last "week we saw a Florida Pastor – with 30 members in his church – threaten to burn Korans which lead to riots and killings in Afghanistan. We also saw Democrats and Republicans alike assume that Pastor Jones had a Constitutional right to burn those Korans. But Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer told me on 'GMA' that he's not prepared to conclude that -- in the internet age -- the First Amendment condones Koran burning."

“Holmes said it doesn’t mean you can shout 'fire' in a crowded theater,” Breyer told me. “Well, what is it? Why? Because people will be trampled to death. And what is the crowded theater today? What is the being trampled to death?” For Breyer, that right is not a foregone conclusion. “It will be answered over time in a series of cases which force people to think carefully. That’s the virtue of cases, and not just cases. Cases produce briefs, briefs produce thought. Arguments are made. The judges sit back and think. And most importantly, when they decide, they have to write an opinion, and that opinion has to be based on reason. It isn’t a fake.”

This is a ridiculous notion that goes against clear Supreme Court precedent on the freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. In Texas v. Johnson in 1989 the Supreme Court specifically ruled that free speech overpowered any concerns about public safety or offensiveness raised by burning the American flag. In that case the Supreme Court specifically said that the "State’s position … amounts to a claim that an audience that takes serious offense at particular expression is necessarily likely to disturb the peace and that the expression may be prohibited on this basis. Our precedents do not countenance such a presumption. On the contrary, they recognize that a principal 'function of free speech under our system of government is to invite dispute. It may indeed best serve its high purpose when it induces a condition of unrest, creates dissatisfaction with conditions as they are, or … even stirs people to anger.” If Breyer were to create a special exception for the Koran it seems that he would have to advocate overruling Johnson if here to remain intellectually and legally honest. To create an exception for the Koran not afforded to the American flag actually seems obscene.

In fact, Breyer is a man
who struck down a ban on burning a cross on the grounds that cross-burning is a valuable part of the First Amendment. For him to now hesitate on Koran burning seems like inexcusable and unprincipled.

Taliban Using Children As Young As 3 Years Old In Afghan Jihad Fight

USA Today reports that Afghan "children as young as 3 years old are being used by the Taliban as human shields or to gather spent cartridges, and teen-agers are being given motorcycles for planting roadside bombs, U.S. Marines say."

"We've seen children actually dropping mortar rounds in the (firing) tubes against us," says Lt. Col. Michael Manning, commander of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment that is rotating home after seven months in this hilly northern district of Helmand province.

"I've never seen a culture that cares so little for human life. They (the Taliban) truly don't care unless it impacts their own personal family," says Manning, who has lost 13 Marines and seen 127 wounded since March.

Interview With Afghan Vet Sgt. Salvatore Guinta ,America's First Living Recipient Of The Medal Of Honor Since The Vietnam War

Federal Court Overturns "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" As Unconstitutional

The Los Angeles Times reports that "a federal judge in Riverside on Thursday declared the U.S. military's ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional, saying the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy violates the 1st Amendment and due process rights of lesbians and gay men. U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips said the policy does not preserve military readiness, contrary to what Justice Department attorneys and many supporters have argued, because evidence shows that the policy in fact has had a 'direct and deleterious effect' on the armed services."

The New York Times reports that Professor William A. Woodruff, a retired Army lawyer who teaches at Campbell University School of Law in Raleigh N.C., said that if this ruling stood, individuals could challenge other kinds of discharges, like those for excess weight or poor eyesight. “Traditionally, the Supreme Court has said federal justices should not be playing in military policy,” he said. “Those are areas where the judiciary does not have the experience or knowledge to substitute their judgment for that of the military commander.” UCLA Law Professor Adam Winkler points out that before he joined the Supreme Court, Anthony Kennedy was a judge on the Ninth Circuit where he directly addressed the conflict between gay rights and military deference. Ruling on the pre-Clinton policy of simply banning homosexuals from the military, Kennedy voted to uphold the complete ban on gays in the military because "constitutional rights must be viewed in light of the special circumstances and needs of the armed forces... In view of the importance of the military's role, the special need for discipline and order in the service," Kennedy explained, the ban on homosexuals in the military was justifiable. Anthony Kennedy would no doubt serve as the fifth vote upholding the military policy if this case were to reach the Supreme Court, assuming of course consistency on Kennedy's part (which is not necessarily the safest assumption, I might add). This case outright ignores the many precedents that provide great deference to the military in making policies for the purpose of maintaining unity and discipline within the service.

Though a case that dealt with a different clause within the First Amendment, this decision is worth comparing to the 1986 Supreme Court decision of Goldman v. Weinberger, in which a Jewish Air Force officer was denied the right to wear a yarmulke (Jewish skull cap) when in uniform on a military base on the grounds that the Free Exercise Clause applies less strictly to the military than to ordinary citizens. The justification for this according to the Supreme Court which upheld the ban was a need to "foster instinctive obedience, unity, commitment, and esprit de corps." It seems to me that if the military is allowed to outlaw certain forms religious expression of officers not in the field of combat, then the military should have no less of a power to ban expression regarding sexual orientation to foster the very same unity and discipline. This is a matter not to be left with one judge, but with military commanders and members of Congress who they report to on the usefulness of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Two Killed In Afghanistan Over Koran Burning That Did Not Even Take Place

Reuters reports that two "people were killed on Sunday in a third straight day of violent Afghan protests sparked by a U.S. pastor's threat to burn copies of the Koran. Hundreds of Afghans kept up the angry demonstrations, some apparently unaware that pastor Terry Jones had dropped his plans. Two protesters were shot and killed in the eastern province of Logar, a district official said, taking the death toll since last Friday to three. The furor over Jones's plan -- a grave insult to Muslims who believe the Koran to be the literal word of God -- overshadowed the lead-up to commemorations of the September 11 hijacked airliner attacks on the United States."

Does this make any sense at all? All this truly does is expose where his loyalties lie, and that is with the Islamic extremists abroad who might view moving the mosque as a defeat, rather than with the American people who are beseeching him in good will to move the mosque as Ground Zero is not the proper place for an Imam, with a history that shows he is not as moderate as the media would have you believe, to make some sort of declaration to America and the world about Islam. What kind of message is the Imam sending? He is essentially sending the message that the mosque must be built or else America will face the wrath of radical jihadists.
